Merger, merger, merger
Written by Scott Keller · February 8, 2008
It’s starting to sound like Jan in the Brady Bunch Movie, but instead of saying, “Marcia, Marcia, Marcia”, she’s saying, “merger, merger, merger.” If the IRL and Champ Car guys don’t merge this time, they had better never bring up the topic again.
The news and blogs across the net are full of speculation, partial stories, and all sorts of opinions. But if you are one of those people who has bought into the merger-talk of the past, you must be foaming at the mouth this morning.
Here’s a list of links related to the story so far:
INDY STAR: Key to open-wheel unity may be in Japan
Yahoo Eurosport UK: Season 2008 - IndyCar-ChampCar merger close
TSN.ca: Champ Car, IRL merger a signature away
Robin Miller/SPEED:Is Open-Wheel Peace Finally at Hand?
A lot of stories, but no confirmations. Open-wheel fans must feel like Charlie Brown, lining up to kick the football. Is Lucy going to pull the football away at the last minute? I would bet so, given the history.
If Kalkoven, Forsythe, and Geroge don’t get this deal done this time, I don’t ever want to hear about a merger ever again.

Got something to say?

I hope it happens, but I wonder how the Champ teams take an entirely new chassis/engine and get it ready for the first race the end of March?
Too much to do and too little time?
Here’s hoping they figure it out and get it done.
Due to the suave and sophisticated nature of “Asspole’s” two previous comments they have been deleted. The signature tells all you need to know.
They’re insane!!!
If anyone beleives these rumors I have some “beachfront” property in Florida to sell them.
I don’t understand why KK/JF-TG would wait until the last minute to settle this more than a decade old fued. It looks more like free advertising for chumpcar to me.
We’ll hear a week or so before the first race that they were unable to reach an agreement again.
It all smells of Humphrey Wheeler style promotion to me.
I don’t think these rumors can’t become reality. In fact, I think if we do have reunification in the next five years, this offer is probably the closest we’ll be.
Let’s remember who we’re dealing with. Forsythe and KK are becoming divided and TG has to be dealing with some type of heat by losing Hornish and Dario. Not to mention Wheldon, Helio and Danica are making their way to the door - while everyother IRL driver wishes they were too.
Champ Car’s teams are going to get beat up out there, but isn’t that initial pain worth the long term success of AOWR?
Welcome back DJ, long time no comment. I believe everyone thinks unification is a must, dare I speak for many when I say we doubt it can happen this quickly for this year.
No doubt the Champ teams will get crucified on track, but as you (along with Paul Tracy) say it’s worth it in the long run.
And mo, most labor/management deals are always brokered at the last minute. How it can possibly work in this case is still beyond my comprehension, but as a fan I’ll keep on hoping!
