Have you ever wondered about the exotic places and exciting encounters a real racing writer experiences as he trots around the globe covering glamorous drivers and teams, wining and dining at the most fabulous local establishments, chain-smoking and living hard all the way to the checkered flag?
Well, here’s your chance to see how it is through my eyes as I prepare to embark to another Indy Racing League IndyCar event, this time in Kansas City, for the Kansas Lottery 300 next Sunday evening (April 29th) at 4:30 PM EDT.
Today’s installment: It’s Not the Destination; It’s the Journey
Sound of (bad) singing, accompanied by guitar:
“On the road again; just can’t wait to get on the road again
Oh, sorry; just getting in a few licks on the ol’ Les Paul as we’re traveling down I-70 westbound here.
Pardon?
You thought we’d be flying? Flying first-class? Or at least business-class?
To borrow another musical metaphor, “S’cuse me, while I kiss the sky!”
Travel budgets are of two types when you’re blogging, Joe: slim and none.
This here variety is the “slim”; at least you’re not hitch-hiking to Dorothy Gale’s twister-prone homestead.
Wouldn’t you know…all the cheap ethanol gas they were practically giving away in KC on Thursday was gone before we ever left ‘Nap-town.
Two-fourteen a gallon for E10 (ten percent ethanol, ninety percent gasoline)…not bad. I can’t remember the last time I paid less than two-fifty for regular unleaded at my favorite Shell station in Carmel.
Coincidentally, 214 mph was the pole qualifying speed at last year’s Indy 300 at Kansas Speedway.
Sadly, there’s no way the black Audi in the passing lane suddenly morphs into the Ferrari F2007 and tops that number.
I’d better get back to watching the road, both hands on the wheel.
What’s that emerald glow on the horizon, Toto?
