From Mediocre To Really Mediocre?

Written by George Katinger · July 27, 2004

The mediocrity in question is Jarno Trulli, the released for 2005 Renault driver, allegedly going to Toyota next year. One win (this year, at Monaco, lest we forget!) 4 podiums and one pole in 124 starts. So who is the really mediocre driver of whom I speak?

racing-live.com: Faure explains Renault’s decision

One win, ten podiums and one pole in eight years. The ten podiums may suggest something more then mediocre, but I would disagree. To not re-sign Jarno Trulli to bring in Giancarlo Fisichella is a waste of time. Unless your objective is to focus your team effort on Fernando Alonso and settle for whatever points your number two driver can pick up. Giancarlo had considerable success in his early carreer posting his podiums with Jordan (believe it or not) and Benneton, his last in 2001. And his win in 2003 at Interlagos was a case of being in the right place at the right time, nothing to do with driving skills or the car.

The point to all this? Why not step up and snag a new face with potential as opposed to the same old thing, over and over? Why not sign a promising young American? Oh yeah, they are a French team, aren’t they? I suppose Mr. Armstrong has quashed any possibility of an American presence in a Renault team, eh? There are a handfull of drivers with demonstrated promise that should have the chance to prove themselves, Anthony Davidson, Justin Wilson, and Timo Glock to name a few.

They don’t allow retread tires on the cars, time to do something about the retread drivers!

It is completely beyond my comprehension why everyone, absolutely everyone associated with F1 signs Fisichella’s praises to the heavens, when he has been consistently unable to actually deliver results since entering the sport.

Rock on Peter! The only bigger disappointment in my view would be Jos Verstappen. Much ballyhoo
with very little performance. And Jos seems to have totally slipped off the radar screens. But it wouldn’t surprise me if he (Jos) turned up in a Williams or a Sauber next year.

Got something to say?
