Sit Schumacher For The Rest Of 2004
Written by George Katinger · August 21, 2004
Much has been written and debated on how to make F1 racing more exciting and competitive. My thought is concede the title to Michael for 2004 and send him on a well deserved holiday!
Bring up one of the teams test drivers, who have labored in relative obscurity, and let them run against Rubens for a small chance at glory. Two things will come from this. Someone other than Michael Schumacher will win a race this year, and the argument if it’s the car or the driver will receive some clarity.
Why this won’t happen: Imagine the insult to the other teams when Rubens finally scratches out a win, or god forbid, when Luca Badoer steps in the cockpit and picks up a podium or a victory. I can hear the howling up and down the paddock now. Not enough that Ferrari dominates, now they bring in the second team, and continue to rub our noses in it? Tough, it’s the fate of losers for not being competitive. And Michael’s chase of Senna’s pole claims. With five races to go there is a good chance he can grab three more poles and at least tie Senna’s 65 career pole record this year.
And poor Rubens, he undoubtedly would win a race, but without Michael to beat it would be hollow, wouldn’t it? It kind of supports the argument that Schumacher shouldn’t retire untill someone bests him on the track in a better car or by a better drive. If he retires “On top” he will allways be in a position to return after retirement to try and reclaim his position of dominance. Couldn’t have that, could we.
All of the above is obviously not going to happen, but is inspired by the basic problem F1 has; boring races dominated by one team. Oh well, next year’s new rules package should level the field a bit and maybe release Ferrari’s strangle hold on the series. And then again……?
