Robby Gordon Starting His Own Cup Team In 2005

Robby Gordon has let Richard Childress know that he will be leaving his team in 2005 to drive for, what he hopes will be his own Nextel Cup team. Cingular Wireless will stay with the 31 car and Childress for 2005. The news is surprising on some levels, but not on others.

Robby’s first try as a Cup series owner came in 2000. However he was quick to realize that he needed to first hone his oval racing skills (coming from an open-wheel, road, and off-road racing background) and leave the day-to-day management of the team to an experienced owner. Gordon has also been fielding a Busch series team under the banner of Team Gordon and having some decent results. But let’s be honest, has Robby really honed his oval racing skills?

Of the three Cup wins he has, two were on the series road courses last year. This past weekend in Martinsville his car was pointed sideways and backwards more than it was straight. He is currently on probation with RCR for admittedly wrecking Greg Biffle intentionally at the last event in New Hampshire and derailing the championship runs of Tony Stewart and Jeremy Mayfield.

I totally appreciate the fact that Robby wants to be a team owner at the highest level in NASCAR. But will he really achieve his goals and meet sponsor needs with himself behind the wheel?

I like Robby. His attitude and grit are characteristics that I appreciate in a person. But he just hasn’t been able to break through racing stock cars and I am absolutely sure that the pressures of team ownership will NOT help his efforts to improve his driving record.
