Racing Through Charlotte

In and around Charlotte, there are tons of activities for race fans besides those roaring cars and spectacular crashes.

I’m here in North Carolina for a few more days, researching a combination NASCAR/travel article for a new online magazine, Automotive Traveler.
There are also plenty of non-NASCAR activities for you to enjoy (like golf and a spa or the giant Concord Mills outlet mall) but I’ll just focus on a few speedy things to do in case you’re considering a trip to the Charlotte area.
The Cabarrus County CVB (Convention and Visitor’s Bureau) has a great pamphlet called “The Racing Side of Charlotte” that is packed with maps and local tourist info. Order it from the Web site before your visit, or pick one up when you arrive.
Many visitors enjoy garage tours, either behind-the-scenes guided tours or just the free stroll across the shop viewing platforms. Big shops close to the Speedway include Hendrick, Ganassi/Sabates and Roush/Fenway. There’s more info on race shop locations here.
You can tour Lowe’s Motor Speedway itself on non-event days with the Feel the Thrill Tour. It’s a half-hour, only costs $5 and includes a ride on the actual track.
Earnhardt fans follow The Dale Trail, a self-guided tour of Kannapolis, NC landmarks related to driver Dale Earnhardt. In your own town, look for showings of the new documentary movie “Dale.”
I had an interesting time at Pit Crew U, where many of the top NEXTEL Cup pit crew members were trained. Located north of the Charlotte area, in Mooresville, it provides a multi-week program (including physical fitness) for over-the-wall crews in a classroom and simulated race environment. During Race Week, the city of Charlotte gears up with the 600 Festival, also called Food Lion Speed Street. It’s held downtown over several days, with food, live music, driver/crew appearances and autograph sessions plus kid’s activities. I really enjoyed Dodge driver Kurt Busch and his enthusiastic crew, who talked to the crowd and then fired up their #2 car for an exciting, up-close pit stop demo, complete with an encore.
