Detroit may get Red Bull Air Race date in 2009

Fan of air racing in the Midwest have something to be optimistic about with a report that the Red Bull Air Race series is considering a return to Detroit in 2009. Series officials were apparently planning on excluding Detroit for a race next year, one that was very successful for the local economies both sides of the US/Canada riverfront. It’s likely a reaction to the fact that Detroit’s Friday and Saturday practice and qualification days had to be canceled this year due to wind gusts.

In this weekend’s Red Bull Air Race in San Diego, Nigel Lamb will be be the first of four pilots to compete in the new MXS composite aircraft in 2008.

The Red Bull Air Race series began their 10-race 2008 tour in Abu Dhabi two weeks ago, and are sending 380 tons of planes and equipment to southern California over the next few days in preparation for the U.S. leg of the season that includes stops in San Diego and Detroit. Paul Bonhomme heads to the States fresh off an opening race win at a race where 2007 Champ, Mike Mangold failed to make the final. Read more
