Now THAT’S A Sponsorship Program!
October 11, 2004
For a single entity running a motorsports sponsorship program, days like yesterday don’t come along often. The US ARMY has been sponsoring race cars and using motorsports as a recruitment tool for several years, but no single race day, to my recollection anyways, has been so kind to a single sponsor’s motorsports PR and marketing programs as yesterday was the US ARMY.
Dale Senior’s Hidden Legacy

Rusty Wallace’s retirement announcement has prompted some to suggest if Rusty is at all nervous behind the wheel, he should walk away now as opposed to next year.

Part of why I built this site is because my dad and I love all forms of racing, so I love it when I hear stores like these…
Racing School Can Cost You
August 29, 2004
I’ve often wanted to go to a high priced racing school such as Skip Barber or Russell. Or even perhaps attend one the of the NASCAR “Experience” schools that let you rip around an oval in a highly restricted race car. I mean, it can’t hurt right? It must be totally safe if they let any “Joe Shmo” get behind the wheel. Plus you never hear about any crashing in a racing school…until now anyways.

In a previous entry I pointed out a program that allows a “regular Joe” (well, actually, members of the motorsports media) to drive an F1 car through a program run by Michelin. However, Ferrari also has a program, but of course it is only for the super wealthy, and super ballsy. The program, called Ferrari F1 Corsi Clienti, allows people to purchase used F1 cars from recent years (right up to last year) and drive them on track whenever they like, while the car is housed and maintained by the factory.
The ‘Bubba Cup’ (Amended)
August 14, 2004
Lunch Thursday was interesting. We met, as usual every week, at the local Lions’ Club for their cheap hot dogs. This gathering has included at times, Chris Economaki, drivers, crew, retired drivers and owners, journalists, etc. The weather and home crises cut into attendance this week but it was still an interesting group. Retired writer Jack Flowers had a suggested scheme to end all the controversy over points, drivers racing injured for points and the Playoffs, errr, Chase for the Championship. Flowers’ idea is that we simply rate the year-end standings based on number of wins. The driver with the most wins is the champion for that season. In case of a tie, then the number of second-place finishes breaks the tie. I’ve named the fictional trophy for the late Bob Latford, one of the men who helped to make NASCAR stock car racing the hugely popular sport it is today. Bob helped many a fledgling reporter, including this writer, get started in the sport and continued to be a friend and helper right to the end.
Mortals in F1 Cars
August 10, 2004
Since we started this site over a year ago I’ve struggled to figure out where we wanted to take it. Is the goal to somehow earn credibility as an actual journalistic news magazine? Or maintain it as an “indie” blog site? While we’ve stuck with the latter due to the tremendous amount of work and investment the former would involve, I think I’ve found reason to try the former anyways. As a member of the “real” automotive/racing media you do get some perks, the most amazing that I’ve seen to date is the chance to drive an actual F1 car.

Just to let all the NY Metro area fans of Mario Andretti know, you may want to plan a trip to New York City’s Grand Central Station some time in the week of October 4th. Andretti will be honored as Grand Marshall of the NYC’s annual Columbus Day Parade and a collection of Andretti’s race cars will be on display at GCC the week before the parade.

Driver “Crossover”
July 18, 2004
Sunday’s crash and fire that injured Dale Earnhardt Jr during practice for the ALMS race at Infineon Raceway will likely result in a lot of blinkered journalists and mouth-breather fans squalling that drivers in their favorite form of the sport should not be allowed to crossover to other kinds of racing.
