No “Choreographed Blandness” in IRL
July 6, 2004
Art Eastman has an interesting piece on VintageMotorsport.com regarding the current state of the sport of auto racing in general…
WRC Turkey: Quote of the Race
July 2, 2004
Marcus Gronholm’s co-driver Timo Rautiainen was injured when a metal bar lying in the road pierced the undercarriage of their Peugeot 307, and the seat, and Timo’s backside. It was at this moment that viewers everywhere learned that it is entirely possible to rattle off driving directions in Finnish while, at the same time, cursing in English.
NASCAR Sets Bad Example
July 1, 2004
The latest in a stream of inconsistencies by NASCAR has competitors and media at a loss. After setting a precedent of how NASCAR handles altercations between drivers last season, their handling of the Tony Stewart situation seems pretty wishy-washy.
NASCAR’s Image Gets Another Wart
June 15, 2004
Sunday’s race at Pocono saw yet another PR bobble by NASCAR, America’s 900-lb motorsports gorilla.
Did the Ferko Lawsuit Lead to NASCAR’s Changes?
May 15, 2004
Almost hidden in the NASCAR press conference held Friday is the revelation that NASCAR very much does not want their business practices revealed. Deep in the transcript of the conference Q&A is Brian France’s statement that: “we have a history of being very aggressive in defending NASCAR’s business practices. We’re aggressive in this case. We’ll be very aggressive in the future. Make no mistake about that.”

As the long awaited first Champ Car season under OWRS ownership is finally upon us, I’ve been taking a closer look at the field that will roll off this Sunday in Long Beach. Now that Champ Car has essentially been stripped down and the rebuilding has begun, I’m wondering what new heroes will arise. To think that the old standbys fleeing to the IRL will leave the series devoid of personality is foolhardy to say the least. Paul Tracy will most likely be the man to beat once again, but what of the rest of the field?
Ferrari 1-2
April 4, 2004
Are there any surprises left in F1 ? Like some one other than Michael in his Ferrari winning a Grand Prix this year? The man and his team have raised the game to a plateau not even remotely attainable by the rest of the sport. And the plateau is elevated race after race.
The only excitement today was both Ferrari’s locking up the brakes at the turn one start. Everything else was anti climactic. The only thing remaining to watch the rest of this year is who will come out second and third, and will Michael exceed Senna’s 65 career pole mark. The former is unknown, the latter a foregone conclusion.
Southern Race Dates On Bubble
March 27, 2004
No matter what is going on in NASCAR racing, every weekend the conversation turns to the same tide: the 2005 schedule. Certainly, Darlington’s name has been tossed around in recent weeks as one of the tracks that may loose a date next season.
Mike Calinoff: Field Filling Frenzy
March 25, 2004
The field-fillers have sure sparked interest these days. I don’t remember such a stir since Brooke Gordon had half the garage subpoenaed in Daytona during the height of the divorce proceedings.
What’s all the fuss about anyway? Shouldn’t these guys have a chance to fulfill a lifelong dream? Absolutely! However, let’s use “chance” as the operative word in this piece.
IRL Sounding Like The CART Of Old
March 25, 2004
With the recent defection of Rahal and Fernandez to the IRL, the series lineup is really starting to sound like the good old days of CART. Think about it, the only legendary CART names not running in the IRL these days are Newman/Haas and Forsythe. You have Penske, Ganassi, Andretti/Green, and now Patrick Racing with Al Unser, Jr. Quality of performance aside - even the Foyt family name, legendary in open wheel racing, runs in the IRL.
