Global IRL

July 5, 2003

Does anyone remember the guiding principal set forth but Tony George when he started the IRL? I seem to remember a few of them being…

1) Lower the cost of open wheel racing to encourage more participants
2) Create more opportunities for American drivers

The being said, why are non-American’s continuing to dominate the IRL, while the American’s pull off a win every once in a while? And even then, Al Unser Jr. is not exactly the “up and coming” new American talent we all had in mind. Granted I am thrilled to see Al win a race again, but I just don’t think the second principal above is being served. Andy Samuelson astutely points out the dominance of Brazilian drivers in the IRL….
