Gittin’ Newman
July 21, 2003
Found this great piece on Ryan Newman versus the average stock car racer. I think it is great to see a Mechanical Engineer with a degree from Purdue racing against all of these slightly refined corporate red necks. It makes tons of sense too when you consider who he works for. Roger Penske was an engineer himself who was more interested in weighing pistons and studying horsepower curves than actually being behind the wheel. Many (outside of NASCAR) have compared Newman to the late great Mark Donohue (Book, Bio)who drove Trans Am and Indy cars for Penske in the60’s and 70’s…

On NASCAR’s recent safety issues
July 17, 2003
This season has seen more scray fires than any I can remember. Ryan Newman in Michigan, Jarrett and Schrader at Pocono, and now Bobby Labonte in Chicago. All of these, especially Labonte and Newman, were scary to watch. Seeing fire burning in the cockpit of the car while the driver is still in there is concerning.
There are a few suggestions being put forth by Ryan Newman and others. Personally I’m going to listen to Newman since he not only drives these cars, but also has a mechanical engineering degree from Purdue!
