With his stepfather’s encouragement, and his assurance that he would talk to Garlits’ mother, Big Daddy was on his way to a career in racing.

Funny Car shakeup

Gary Densham is leaving Force to start his own team. Will Force keep his car, and if yes, who takes the seat? Will Scotty Cannon ditch Funny Car to go back to a series where he has had more success? Change is also in the wind at Del Worsham’s CSK Racing team. Silly season is in full swing in the NHRA…at least in the Funny Car category. ESPN’s Bill Stephen’s reports.

Doug Kalitta breifly sat in the lead position in Saturday qualifying at Brainerd. Larry Dixon and the Miller Lite crew answered Kalitta’s charge with a 4.63 at 321 mph. Gary Scelzi remained in control of the Funny Car ranks while Kurt Johnson broke Brainerds day-old speed record Saturday with a 201.01 mph pass. Reggie Showers took his first pole position in his 64 race Pro Stock Bike career…
