Cautious Optimism

Written by George Katinger · October 16, 2004

That is my reaction to reading the news that CBS will broadcast Champ Car races next year. That’s the good news.

reuters.com: Champ Car, CBS Reach Deal

The not so good news is CBS will air only seven races. Spike TV is out, and the balance of the schedule will be broadcast on SpeedTv or Fox Sports. The bad news is that Champ Cars is PAYING CBS 10 million to provide the coverage.

I guess if the only way to air live coverage is to buy your own time, it’s a necessary investment. Let’s hope the deal generates ratings and eventualy turns into a money maker rather than a cash drain.

I just realized something REALLY bad about having it on my local affiliate… They have a nasty habit of preempting with golf. At least Spike was consistent!

Maybe I’ll at least get the ones presented on Speed.

It is good news that ChampCar is coming back to broadcast TV. It will probably make the series more attractive to American sponsors.

Got something to say?
