Champ Car Heads West To San Jose With Edmonton In The Rear View Mirror

Written by Scott Keller · July 27, 2007

Champ Car kicks off their weekend in San Jose this week after a less-than-exciting race in Edmonton.

If you caught last week’s Champ Car race in Edmonton, you probably weren’t on the edge of your seat. It was, in fact, a total blow-out. Sebastian Bourdais put on one of his classic performances. And in the last few years, a classic Sebastian run-away race usually equals a less than exciting race. The most exciting part of the race was the near-miss that Bourdais had with Katherine Legge during a pit stop. Once Will Power was out with steering problems, only the perennial bridesmaid, Justin Wilson, could hang somewhat close to Bourdais.

Robert Doornbos made a dumb move and crashed out last week in Edmonton, and he struggled most of the weekend. If he’s a serious championship contender, the guys has to have a podium finish this week.

And it could not come at a worse time for Doornbos, because San Jose is one of the tightest circuits on the schedule, and provides few opportunities for passing. Bobby D needs to figure things out in qualifying, or he’s going to be stuck in the mid pack, in prime position to get punted by the back markers. Speaking of punted, Mario Dominguez is subbing for Ryan Dalziel (pronounced Deeyal…….kind of like ya’ll, but with a D at the front) this week who broke his collar bone in a crazy bicycle accident. Watch out!

On a happier note, Tristan Go-Go-Gommendy was cleared to race by Dr. Trammell, and is back in this car for morning practice.

Speaking of morning practice, with six minutes to go in the first session, the top 5 are:

Power
Pagenaudt
Bourdais
Wilson
Servia

Doornbos is almost a second off the pace so far. Not a good start, but the weekend is young.

Coverage for the San Jose Grand Prix begins at 6PM ET on Sunday evening.
