Ryan Hunter-Reay drove his Herdez Competition Lola/Ford Champ Car to a dominating win at Milwaukee on Saturday night. Hunter-Reay led every single lap of the race. This was the first time a Champ Car driver has completed that feat since Bobby Rahal did it in 1992. Ryan also set a new Champ Car record for most laps led in a race. This was Ryan’s second career victory having won the final race of the 2003 season.

Podium finishers aside, the rest of the field had rough going as Ryan, second place finisher Patrick Carpentier, and 2003 Milwaukee Mile winner Michel Jourdain (Ryan’s teammate) were the only cars to finish on the lead lap. Consequently Ryan, Patrick and Michel spent most of the race dealing with lapped traffic, which can be harder than racing the leaders…especially in this field.

Luck improved for other Americans in the field. Jimmy Vasser had a decent finish in 4th place while A.J. Allmendinger came from 13th to finish 5th.

While I’m happy for Ryan, I hope he can parlay this oval success into something on the road courses. It doesn’t do you much good to be an oval ace in Champ Cars anymore.
