The Champ Car World Series and the world’s leading fast-food chain McDonald’s® recently announced a partnership that will see the restaurant chain serve as the “Official Fast Food Restaurant of Champ Car” through the 2006 season.

So Formula 1 has pit babes, and Champ Car has Ronald McDonald. Ok, ok, this really is good news for ChampCar, having signed a deal with one of America’s most recognized corporations, and it lends some credibility to the series to a certain extent. I was hoping Champ Car’s big announcement was going to be a title sponsor, not an official fast food restaurant. But with the sponsorship money being sparse in these times, I’m quite thankful that McDonald’s® stepped up to the plate.
Here are some things I think Champ Car and McDonald’s® should do:
- Put Champ Car “hot weels” cars in Happy Meals, and make sure to put a small poster with the drivers picture and name in big letters. We want these kids excited about the driver, and to tell their parents about how excited they are that they got PAUL TRACY’S car!
- Find a way to get an American driver in the McDonald’s® sponsored Champ Car. Bourdais is one heck of a driver, but McDonald’s is an icon of Americana. Perhaps Bourdais would do better in a PacifiCare car, and Newman-Haas could enter a third car with an American driver. (I can dream, can’t I?)
- While I’m dreaming still, McDonalds should do a special ad campaign and bring back the old characters like Ronald, Grimace, The Early Bird, The Fry Guys, etc. It could be a series of ads that lead up to the revelation that Tony George is the Hamburgler. Hmm, yes, I like it.
