No Laguna Seca In ‘05: What Are They Thinking?!!

Written by George Katinger · January 22, 2005

Or more appropriately not thinking? Hey Tony George, that sound you hear is opportunity knocking!

tsn.ca: Champ Car says no to Laguna Seca
montereyherald.com: Disenchanted with Champ Car
autonet.ca: Another race gassed

The home of one of the most famous racing passes in history (Zanardi on Herta at the corkscrew) is no longer a part of the Champ Car schedule. Not to mention all of the other significant history associated with CART/Champ Car racing! What are they thinking? The alleged reason is a conflict of dates with a potential race date in Argentina. What are they thinking!! With Long Beach potentially gone next year, and the losses of Mid-Ohio, Road America and now Laguna Seca, will there be any Champ Car history left? Are they thinking at all???

It would seem the door is wide open for Tony George to step in and snap up dates at Long Beach and Laguna Seca, just to keep OWRS out of two of their own historicaly signifcant sites. If you have no road racing history, buy someone elses!

I thought we’d already whined about this. Without much care Champ Car could become a series without a home.

Prior to yesterday it was a strong rumor…this is official confirmation. And as opposed to a series without a home it will turn into a series with no american tracks OR drivers.

P.S. In fairness to Champ car, Laguna Seca drew only 5,000 fans to last years event. A poor showing for sure, but symptomatic of what? The event or the general state of the series? Hopefully they can return L.S. to the schedule in ‘06, but some how I doubt it.

I will NOT support Tony George and IRL. No $$$ or on TV. Champ Car lost out on this one. A series with no where to race.

Got something to say?
