Will Walker Make The Field In 2005?

Written by Scott Keller · March 2, 2005

Derrick Walker revealed that he may not be able to field his team this year due to lack of sponsorship.

SPEEDTV.com reports today that Walker is in jeopardy of having to sit out 2005. This comes as a surprise to those of us on the “outside”, because Walker reportedly had some great tests with Christijan Albers, Nicky Pastorelli, Norbert Siedler, and will have Mario Haberfeld in their new Lola later this week.

Walker has been in Champ Car for 14 years, and it would be a shame to see him sit out this year. Losing a long-standing team could serve as a negative blow to what little tradition Champ Car has left. Hopefully the new TV package will encourage some new sponsors to step up with Norbert Siedler, who is currently working on putting a sponsorship package together. I also hope that the three amigos are jumping in with an organized effort to drum up some sponsorship for new teams.

Walker says that with his team out, that Champ Car will be at the 17 or 18 car level. I know the officials of Champ Car were hoping for over 20 cars in every race this year.

I will keep my fingers crossed and hopes alive that something will come through., because Champ Car will be a better series if Walker stays involved.
