Wilson on Provisional Pole
Written by Scott Keller · June 18, 2005
Portland has a new track record, set by Justin Wilson in provisional qualifying of Champ Car World Series Round 4.
The track record isn’t suprising, however. Portland International Raceway underwent changes in the offseason in the “Festival Curves” that makes the track a lot faster. According to Salem Statesman Journal, “The second of the three-turn complex was recontoured so drivers can maneuver more smoothly through that portion of the track and reduce the number of altercations.”
The new track configuration suited Wilson well. Taking the provisional pole guarantees him a front row starting position, and brings him within 6 points of Bourdais in the standings. The injury to Bruno Junqueira has really tighted up the points race.
A.J. Almengdinger had a great session as well, qualifying second after being fastest all day in practice. Bourdais could have been third, but was penalized for not giving way to Justin Wilson when exiting the pits. His second fastest lap still kept him in the top 5, but still hurt his efforts. Look for Sebastian to be fast today as he makes an effort to best Wilson’s track record.
