Is “The Car Of Tomorrow” The Ugliest Race Car Ever?

Today was a banner day for two of the top American racing series. In Champ Car, the Panoz DP01 took to Sebring for its first test (some nay-sayers are eating crow today), and in NASCAR, the Car Of Tomorrow took the track at MIS.
In the few pictures I have seen of this thing so far, I must say that I believe it could be the ugliest design to ever race in NASCAR. I just don’t know what in the world they are thinking with this rediculous looking car.
How many of you out there agree with me, that this is the ugliest race car ever?
Reed Sorenson agrees with me. In a Foxsports.com story he is quoted as saying,
‘I think they’re the ugliest car I’ve ever seen. I don’t even want to get in it. I’ll wait until they make us next year.”
The article goes on to mention the wooden air splitters. Yes, I said “wooden”.
Sorenson goes on to say in the article, “The last time I drove it I got into the wall a little bit at Bristol and broke the piece of wood in the front,” he said. “We had to go to Home Depot and get some more wood and fix her up.
This is just too funny. Congratulations, NASCAR, on building the ugliest race car ever.

When the F1 guys brought in the grooved tyres & narrowed the cars width I thought it was the ugliest thing on earth, & yet now when I look at the curves on the McLaren or the Renault it appears to be a work of art. Those hideous air boxes on the mid 70’s F1 cars brought yells of outrage & yet I think Niki Lauda’s Ferrari is one of the most beautiful designs.Any fundamental change in appearance will always cause howls from the faithful, this too shall pass.
I don’t think its the ogliest racecar ever, but it is outthere, I have only seen pictures, but I think that NASCAR’s Car Of Tomorrow, simply put I don’t like it, but I have been looking at the Toyota Camry for Red Bull Racing and the Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS that Truex Jr. tested in Sears Point, I have noticed that the COT does look similer to the street verson after all, at least the Toyota and Chevy versions do, picture the stock Toyota Camry or the stock Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS with a ground effects/body kit and an aftermarket rear wing and you are close to the COT. Just look at it, I will be interested in seeing the final verson next year and then I will really have something to say.
Weather ugly or pretty the car of tomorrow is not the answer to nascars problem,I like the idea of limiting teams to three or even two cars so we can see some of the smaller budgeted teams up front. In the old days racing was about talent, not about how thick your WALLET is!!!
Out of all the current series, the COT is by far the most ugliest but the Daytona Prototypes are a close second.
I think the rear wing absolutely kills NASCAR’s tradition. How many Monte Carlo’s have you seen with a wing like that? And if you did, it was at a sports car show. Is NASCAR becoming sports cars on ovals?
Well, frankly the current common tempate does not inspire much either. “Stock” cars should at least resemble the showroom car. Since the demise of the Thunderbird in cup there has not been much reason to “race on Sunday , buy on Monday.” I went to a Chevy dealer to look at a Monte Carlo. All I could think was what the hell happen to that SS of my 1980’s youth?
And as a ex Taurus driver, I knew that thing was no race car. Just a Hertzmobile. I hope the Bush series folows through with the idea for racing the new muscle cars (mustangs, chalenger, camaro). Then I will be happy.
Whether or not this car is ugly is irrelevant. It is. NASCAR is evolving from a technology- and talent-driven sport into a personality-driven exhibition. It is no longer relevant who wins just as long as one of the pretty boys gets on TV to plug their products.
NASCAR = National Association of Spec Car Auto Racing
The constant put downs about NASCAR not being “stock” gets quite annoying. No one would watch if we saw Monte’s racing against Focus’s at Daytona with the top speed being 100 MPH.
Here’s a whole list of real “stock” car drivers”: http://www.grandamerican.com/DriverTeam/Default.asp?Sort=14_0
Grand-Am Cup may not visit ovals, but they are more stock than any other race car.
it is ugly, I don’t care what NASCAR is thinking as long as they stop it now…
If getting new viewers is the goal, this car is not gonna do it, people want sexy, loud and fast… This COT is like doing a remake of the movie ” Tomb Raider” with Bea Arthur in the lead.
I think the new car is not only ugly it’s to small.
