New Racing Movie From Disney and Pixar

Written by John Davison · May 27, 2006

You’ve probably seen trailers for it, but Disney/Pixar’s film “Cars” may be one of the best racing movies made. If you like drama, action, humor, crashes and plot twists, you’ll probably like this G-rated computer animation film.

“Starring” the voices of Owen Wilson, Paul Newman, Larry the Cable Guy, Bonnie Hunt and many more, the film has more visual puns and jokes than even Mel Brooks’ classic “Blazing Saddles” without the box office limit of an “R” rating. Watch it carefully for background details. Listen to it carefully for the skill most of the voice talent show in their work. Watch it mainly for sheer enjoyment.

The premiere, held Friday evening at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, was awash with more than just stars and anticipation, as rainstorms blew through the area just before gates opened to admit the crowds. Most of the film’s stars were in attendance, along with numerous racing and local sports celebs.

Richard Petty features in the film, as “The King” portrayed by a Plymouth Superbird. Paul Newman is “Doc” as the sole mechanic in the town of Radiator Springs, an off-the-Interstate town about to become a ghost town after the Interstate slashes through the country. Owen Wilson is the main character, “Lightning McQueen” who has to learn life’s most important lessons the hard way.

One viewing is not enough for this writer. Thanks to Racing Information Systems for press credentials and a guest pass to the premiere. Yes, we’ll be going back to the theatre next month!
