Bernie Intervenes To Save F1
Written by George Katinger · November 10, 2007
Bernie Ecclestone, no doubt at the behest of the new F1 rights ownership, has called together the F1 teams in an attempt to stem the tide of negative publicity surrounding the sport due to ?spying?.
The meeting has been attended by all the teams in F1 with the exception of Ferrari, McLaren, and Renault. Bernie is now apparently desperate to put a halt to the bad publicity surrounding all of the spying and possession of intellectual property by competing teams.
Possession of another team?s ?intellectual property? is something that has become prominent only since the sport has reached the billion dollar market value. After all, competitive racing of any kind has always been about finding out why the other guy?s car is faster than your own. And the employee?s who make those cars go faster are constantly on the move from team to team. You want your car to improve next year? Hire the guy who engineered the car that kicked your butt last year. Why? Because he will bring the knowledge with him. Whether in his head or in a brief case, how can you stop the transfer of engineering knowledge from team to team? You can?t.
What used to be a commonly accepted practice has become a criminal offense, depending on who did what to whom. And the implications for the future have been radically compounded by the excessive penalties suffered by McLaren in their resolution of the Ferrari spying mess. And the outcome of that has yet to be put to bed, pending the inspection of the 2008 McLaren by the appointed FIA technical stooges.
So what?s the answer to prevent the transfer of knowledge between teams? Their isn?t any, as long as team personnel continue to move from squad to squad. Let the ideas flow with the people, after all that?s one way to elevate the lesser teams to a performance level that?s less than embarrassing, isn?t it?
If you really want to clean up the bad pub Bernie, you need only to rid the sporting world of one party: Max Mosley. Yes, your buddy Max, in an ill conceived and over reactive manner acting against the alleged high crimes and misdemeanors of McLaren Mercedes has set a precedent that may effectively kill the sport.
I can hardly wait to hear the outcome of Bernie’s meeting, and what the teams and he will propose to stop the pain.

I’ve been watching F1 since high school(60’s) and never have I seen such a joke its turned out to be.You can reverse the rotation of the world so MAX please come out of your office with no windows and run a racing organization like a professional like the the people you represent!
My utter frusration with this world class racing boss has led me to to misspell my thoughts,I meant YOU CANT REVERSE THE ROTATION OF THE EARTH
Thank you
Don’t worry about any spelling slips 66 cobra, Max has me talking to myself and inducing hive attacks. Somebody somewhere has gotta have the juice to terminate this jerky boy’s career.
“you need only to rid the sporting world of one party: Max Mosley. Yes, your buddy Max”
That’s the whole point! Max is Bernie’s hand puppet & has been doing his bidding for decades. It’s a bit late for the puppet master to be stepping in now.
As Bernie sold most of his ownership in F1, it’s time for the owners to throw Ecclestone AND Max overboard.
I agree with Peterg. Ecclestone has been in for the money and has not cared with F1 a whole lot for a while. How can you not make it easier for markets that are important for the car owners, like the US? Because these third world countries put a lot more money in Bernie’s pocket. How can he threaten Silverstone and the UK grand Prix every year when most of the teams are based in England and most of the great designers and Engineers are from there? I hope they get rid of these two guys.
Also, I don’t know what the fuss is all about with these chief designers bringing secrets, ideas t a new team, we have always known that it takes a lot more than just copying a car to make it as competitive as the car copied from and I think it is because it is a whole team approach and even the designers have ethical values, more than Max and Bernie, at least. because if that was the case Toyota, Honda, Red Bull would be up there with the Ferrari’s and McLaren’s the past three seasons. McLaren is always a contender and should have been given a lot more credit for coming up with a fast car capable of winning the championship, even though I gave them a lot of shit this year for what RD did. Renault was world champion the last two seasons and with FA joining them as well as tons of other big sponsors they can get up there as well and why not handicapping them now, before the season starts? Yep, Bernie is seeing that he created a monster in Max, trying to help Ferrari be the N1 team.
lighten up you guys on the maxine and bernice show. just think where we would be without them. we wouldn’t have ferrari(with the largest fan base in motorsports, larger than even little e’s) winning championship. what would we do with all that red paint and clothing without ferrari?

Just curious as to your facts on the above comment. Certainly Ferrari have a large and loyal following in F1, and their fans may bring the most banners and air horns to races. But on an international stage and at all levels of racing, I think Porsche may have them out numbered. As usual I bring no facts to support may end of the discussion, any you can produce will be appreciated.
George, I would just be going on the bernice and maxine’s show’s conservative estimate that F1 is second only to soccer in televised worldwide sports. It has been stated many times that ferrari merchandise outsells almost all other teams sales combined. Have you ever been to an F1 race George?
Indy was a sea of red.
Phoenix, Detroit, Las Vegas, Long Beach, at least half of the hats or shirts were red. I’m not gloating about either, just a fact. I was a Ferrari fan long before my first race, late 60s. I was amused by the number of red fans until Indy, when it seemed everyone wore red, it made me sick of the logo and colour and the tag alongs who just follow the pack or who ever is winning at the time.
Unlike you and me my friend, who live and die with our hero’s daily.
And by the way, Porsche?
Who’s that?
Do they race cars?
I’ve see the expensive rear engined volkswagens driving around on the streets before, but do you really mean someone would take one of them on the track with that wicked oversteeer? Where would they let them race those dangerous machines?
Has to be a liberal country like France or something. Gee I thought Audi ruled that around the clock lemons race thingy anyways. Oh wait, I get the connection now, Audi is owned by volkswagen who also owns the porch hench the racing deal?
