British GP Axed for 2005
Written by Josh Katinger · October 1, 2004
In yet another beautiful illustration of the ills currently plaguing F1, the British Grand Prix at Silverstone has been left off the provisional 2005 Formula 1 race schedule.

The group that owns the historic Silverstone track, the British Racing Drivers’ Club (BRDC), lodged what it felt was a respectable offer to Bernie Ecclestone in order to host the British GP…something like $16m. Of course this wasn’t enough for Mr. Money Bags. And all this after a significant investment from BRDC and the British Government on recent upgrades to the track in anticipation of continuing to host the mainstay event.
This is an absolute joke at this point. With so many teams based in the UK, so many fans in the UK, and let’s face it - the sport has a ton of history in England and at Silverstone - couldn’t there be some exceptions made? Once we get up into the multi-billion dollar range when we are talking about the amount of cash that’s going into one man’s pocket, isn’t it time to stop and take stock of what is going on here? Yes, Ecclestone built F1 into what it is today, but if he doesn’t stop this greedy crap soon, he’ll have destroyed it by the time he retires…or dies…the latter probably coming first.

Looks like the British GP may be saved by a bit of work from HM Government. Minister for sport has gotten Bernie to meet Silverstone’s owners half way and the rest may be met annonymously. Latest rumour is Bernie gets a knighthood if it all goes through. Any thoughts on who the annon doner might be?
