Button to Williams in 2005!

Written by Josh Katinger · August 5, 2004

Everyone counted Sir Frank out, including myself. Everyone said he let Fisichella slip through his fingers and snub him for Renault. We insolent fools should have known that Williams had a plan all along! While it was common knowledge that he had Mark Webber sewn up to take over Ralf Schumacher’s seat for 2005, the stunner today is that Jenson Button will take over Juan Pablo Montoya’s spot at Williams BMW for 2005 and 2006!

Ok, so why am I so stunned? First of all, I haven’t seen it speculated and/or rumored anywhere. They really slipped this one under the radar. Second of all, I’m dumbfounded as to why Jense would want to vacate BAR at this point, other than for a ton more money…but we know Frank Williams is tight with a buck when it comes to driver salaries. Jenson must honestly believe that Williams will provide him with a better chance to win the World Championship than BAR. Common wisdom would say that that claim holds water. However, the current season might make me think twice!

The performance of BAR (Jenson’s BAR that is) has far exceeded that of Juan Pablo and Williams. How much of that is due to the fact that Juan has already “checked out” mentally to his McLaren ride for next season? Who knows. Maybe Button just fancies ugly cars.

Having Jense move to Williams would normally give me a warm, fuzzy hopeful feeling that perhaps we’ll see him win his first GP and maybe even give Ferrari a run for their money. However I’m just not getting that with the performance of BAR vs. Williams in 2004. I think Jense might find himself fighting his old BAR for 2nd and 3rd place on the podium.

Jenson Button:

“I am very pleased that I had the option to re-join the BMW WilliamsF1 Team where my Formula One career started. For the meantime, the 2004 season has my full focus and attention. Beyond this, I have every confidence that the massive investment in resources and the depth of talent at WilliamsF1 and BMW provides the best platform for my future ambitions to be a World Champion.”

Ugly? Well yeah, but you’re in for a surprise next week methinks. Tusks are gone and the old trunk is back. And did you really think FW didn’t have a plan? It’s just a pity he has used all four of the allowed drivers this season or we’d see Jenson do a mid-season switch.

What a slug of a man! Why do most team owners treat drivers like high priced whores? Because most of them act like that!!

Got something to say?
