Coulthard Gets 1-Year Career Extension from Red Bull
Written by Josh Katinger · December 17, 2004
In a highly anticipated move, Red Bull Racing announced today that it has signed David Coulthard to a one-year contract. Coulthard, by no means a spring chicken as far as F1 goes, is lucky to have gotten this ride as it was most likely his last hope at a decent ride for next season. There is still no word on who his teammate will be, though it is most likely to be the sophomore Austrian Christian Klien.

Red Bull Racing showed that it is more than ready for the F1 PR circus by beating around the bush on the Coulthard deal for several days before making it official.
I can’t help but think back to Damon Hill’s career post-Williams. He had some very inspirational runs for both Arrows and Jordan, but of course those were the twilight years of his F1 days. Save for those few good results they were mostly miserable times which ultimately led to his giving up the sport. I get the feeling David might be on a similar path.
Red Bull (or Jaguar as we’ve known them in years past) showed hints of brilliance last year and the year before, but nothing near what BAR and Renault came up with. I can’t imagine that the buyout by Red Bull will have a stabilizing effect on race-to-race operations, but it’s better than being unemployed…so would say all the Red Bull Racing employees - including it’s newest, Mr. Coulthard.

maybe he’ll grow some balls now.
Cojones without a decent car are somewhat irrelevant. And guess which active driver has the most wins besides Herr Schumacher? Correct, David Coulthard.
Maybe Coulthard and Villeneuve have both lost their competitive edge; But at least Villeneuve has a slightly better chance to prove himself at Sauber then Coulthard at Real Bull, er Red Bull. I get the feeling that Mateschitz only cares about seeing the name “Red Bull” in the media, regardless of how it gets there. We can expect him to meddle with the team and drivers all year long in a relentless attempt for cheap publicity to keep attention on the product name.
maybe with a few Red Bull energy drinks he’ll grow some balls.
I think it’s “wings” that you’re supposed to grow. . . or is it red balls? I can’t remember.
So you are a Chappell fan Muddy?
Will this lead to a Red Bull podium next year? Logic says no way. However to me this is a smart move to get an experienced drivers input that has recently been with a top team which will boost the learning curve while the team regroups next year.
Exactly Elvis, and if Wiliams had half a brain in his head he would have hired Coulthard for one year until ‘06 when his fav, Jenson will come on board.
Yeah, I know, Jenson is making kissy face with new owner Honda, but I’m thinking he already signed with Frank for ‘06, and they are keeping it under wraps.
