I Thought It Was New Year’s Eve, Not April 1st?

Written by George Katinger · December 29, 2005

The title of the attached article is what gives me pause to consider whether I entered a time warp, missed New Year Day celebrations and went right to April Fool’s Day.

gp2005.com: We can beat Ferrari says Red Bull

Could this be an early April Fools joke? In spite of all the new talent on the team, does Red Bull Racing management REALLY expect to top the team that supplies their engines? The first time that RBR tops Ferrari in a race finish on racing merit alone, is the time that “difficulties” in engine supply and manufacturing will suddenly appear. Not only will the Ferrari engines suddenly develop technical flaws, RBR may not even recieve new engines!

It’s not smart to spit in the eye of your engine supplier, Christian. While every teams objective should be winning races and championships, one must also realize the teams limitations.

The article seems to imply that the RBR’s Michelin tires may be an advantage over the Ferrari’s Bridgestone shoes. Nothing could be further from the truth. While Michelin demonstrated superior performance with the single race tire, they never came close to topping Bridgestone in prior years with unlimited tire changes. I look for the same results next year, unless Michelin developed a super sticky compound, that will also work as well for the upcoming season.

Not to mention the Ferrari penchant for unlimited testing in season to upgrade their aero-engine packages. You can be sure that the engine RBR recieves at the last race will more than likely not out perform the engine they get for the first race. Especially if RBR threatens Ferrari’s finishing placement.

RBR racing is using customer Ferrari engines, I thought in any business the customer always comes first

Got something to say?
