Schumacher Unhurt After Big Testing Crash
Written by Josh Katinger · September 3, 2004
Newly crowned F1 World Champion Michael Schumacher escaped unhurt yesterday from a 186mph testing crash at Monza. The cause is thought to be a tire failure. Schumacher got out of the car and laid down in the grass as a precaution, but did not need medical attention. He flew home to Switzerland after the test session.

While I don’t wish to express morbid thoughts, every time Michael does this (this is NOT his first big testing shunt) the first thing I think is “if we are going to lose him on the race track, this is how it will happen.” Many drivers have gone out “with their boots on” on live TV and/or in front of huge crowds…Senna the most recent. But the only time Michael seems to give a big scare, and run up his repair bill back in Maranello, is during testing.
Don’t they have test drivers for this stuff?

See, and most people think he never is on the limit. He dosen’t need to spin in the race, he finds the cars limits in testing or practice.
You may be right, George, but this crash is being reported as a tire failure in the very articles that you cite in the above piece.
Whoops, sorry. . . it was Josh who posted the citations.
