Will he or won’t he retire at the end of this season? A much debated question during the prior silly season and one that will be continually asked all year long.

Regardless of one’s opinion on whether The King will call it a carreer at season’s end, one thing is certain: We should all watch and appreciate Michael Schumacher’s skills with the certain knowledge that he is not long for the sport he loves. Simon Barnes of the Times On Line has written an excellent piece on his carreer and impact on the sport, as well as to how he accomplished such legendary statistics and acclaim.
The title of my posting tells you how Schumi rates, in my humble opinion, ranked against drivers of all time. Even Schumacher himself has conceded that Juan Manuel Fangio is the best of the best, based on the way and what they raced, in the formative years of F1. Try going racing in your short sleeved shirt and polo helmet in a car with the equivalent of bicycle tires. I think you’ll agree it took something special for Fangio to win five titles when losing your life was more of a reality then a mere chance.
But we should all appreciate one of, if not the last, opportunity to see greatness in action.

I WONDER HOW SCHUMACHERS STATS WOULD LOOK IF SENNA
HAD LIVED LONGER. ONE CAN ONLY GUESS
I’ve wondered about the same thing Steve. I’m not sure if Senna had the temperment to last five years at any one team. For sure Senna’s driving skills were beyond question, but the team building and loyalty to and from team members generated by Michael are truly unique.
that was a great article. i enjoy f1 because i enjoy watching schumacher drive. i don’t feel the same excitement i feel for schumacher for anyone else on the grid. no one even comes close.
everything points to michael retiring this year. i hope ferrari send him off on a high note. he truly deserves it.
The Senna question will remain one of the great mysteries, how many seasons would he have continued to race? One thing is certain, at that stage of his career I could not have seen him signing on to Ferrari in the mid 90’s (whatever the retainer) to deliver them from the wilderness.
