The Relentless Mr. Eccelstone!
Written by George Katinger · December 13, 2004
Sounds like a bad movie title from the 40’s. But in this case it’s just another bad idea from Bernie the Benevolent.
pitpass.com: The London Grand Prix
crash.net: Ecclestone: London could still stage a grand prix.
sportinglife.com: NEWEY’S CONCERN OVER 19-RACE SEASON
sport.guardian.co.uk: Record race schedule hits small teams
The benevolence refers to Mr. E’s willingness to grant the poor huddled masses of London their very own Grand Prix. At a time when the teams are up in arms over the upcoming 19 race schedule, how does he do it? How does he manage to keep floating the ideas of new race sites when no one seems to want them, except Bernie?
I suppose he doesn’t subscribe to the theory that abscence makes the heart grow fonder, or that rarity enhances value. And with the pending addition of Mexico, South Africa and lord only knows where else, it’s only a matter of time before Europe loses two-three more sites. As much as I am a fan of NASCAR, 36 races is a bit over the top. If I miss a dozen or so during the year, I’m not upset. There’s always next week!
