The qualifying performance of the weekend has to belong to Sauber-BMW’s Sebastian Vettel. The 19 year old qualified in 7th and actually briefly led the time sheets in practice session 3. If he has a top seven finish it would put Dr. Mario Thiessen in a tough spot, choosing between the injured Robert Kubica and Vettel, upon Kubica’s clearance to drive again. I’m sure it’s a dilemma Flavio would love to have, or any of the lesser teams, like Toyota.

But let’s look to who will win tomorrow. The truly amazing thing about the start of Lewis Hamilton’s F1 career, is that he’s never finished a race lower than his qualifying place. I think it’s easy to say Hamilton will gather up his second win, barring any first turn/first lap mayhem.

I’ve predicted elsewhere in our forum that Alonso’s and Massa’s races will come to an early end at turn one, and the podium will be Hamilton, Raikkonen and Heidfeld.

Happy Father’s day to all our U.S. readers and here’s to a great race day tomorrow. With passing chances at the ends of the front and back straights, we may see some passing amongst the leaders.

    How funny.

“I’ve predicted elsewhere in our forum that Alonso’s and Massa’s races will come to an early end at turn one, and the podium will be Hamilton, Raikkonen and Heidfeld.”

That’s exactly what I was just thinking.

Unfair on Massa though ‘cos he seems a good kid and driver.

I was also impressed with Vettel (I live in Switzerland). Congratulations to him.

Being English I will be supporting Hamilton, if your prediction comes true, he will win the title.

    A pretty impressive debut :-)

Welcome Clark, my Massa/Alonso coming together is based on two things. Their prior experience in Barcelona, and desperation. Both are desperate to regain momentum and may try risky moves at the start. Especially Alonso, witness his Canadian GP moves.

We could also cast Kimi amongst the quick and desperate, but he seems to have had slow starts this year.

As we mentioned in the forum, if Vettel keep his head he will score points on debut.

When I saw the odds for his finishing in the top 3, 17:1, I couldn’t resist a small wager.

George, I too have a strange feeling about the run down to the first corner at the start.

Got something to say?
