Why Fernando Will Win It All Again
Written by George Katinger · March 16, 2006
Yes, I picked Alonso for another title this year. Not too hard a choice you say, damned difficult says I.
With multiple teams and drivers demonstrating speed and durability (at least for one race) this year’s title can fall to any of the fast six this year. Alonso, Raikkonen, Schumacher, Button (win your first race, please) Montoya, and arguably Fisichella, all stand reasonable chances at the championship.
Why Alonso? His maturity, speed, car, and more importantly his understanding of the need to finish races and gain points each and every race. Some quotes from the current champion, from thesun.co.uk:
“I am the same as last year, thinking I have to be consistent. I cannot make mistakes, I need to finish races and finish on the podium.
“But it will be harder. Last year we fought only with McLaren and if you had a very bad weekend you finished fourth because there were no more teams.
“This year there are four teams

I agree with a lot of what you have to say, except for the maturity of Alonso. He’s a baby when it comes to back markers. Waving his arms at someone in front of him long before he’s even close to them. He may understand the importance of finishing in the points, but he still has a long way to go in his racecraft.
I will admit I have never liked Alonso. Even when he was at Minardi I didn’t like him. He’s learned to control himslef in front of the press, but I don’t care about that. Quotes don’t get you anywhere on race day. It’s how he behaves on track that matters most.
Yes Tim, I noticed the same behavior. His explanation was not concern over the back markers, but a lack of blue flags from the marshalls to alert the back markers the leader was approaching and get out of the way.
You can view it as immaturity or an appreciation of race craft. he knows the marshall’s job, why don’t they?
I think this is going to be the year of the number 2 driver. The champion will be the driver who has a number 2 who can start taking 2nd & 3rd place, protect his lead & rob points.
Fisi???,
Massa (forget it)
Kimi & JPM, who’s number 2?
Historically the guy who wins the first race of the season, more often than not, goes on to take the title.Still to early to tell IMHO, but if the Mclarens don’t step up to the plate in Malaysia, it will be another year of playing catch up to a Renault/Alonso who banked a early lead.
