Briscoe and Wilson lead the field to green at the Glen

Written by Scott Keller · July 5, 2008

indycar-series-logo-thumbnail.JPGRyan Briscoe set the fast time of the final qualifying session today at Watkins Glenn and will be on pole for tomorrow’s Camping World Grand Prix at the Glenn. The young Aussie put his road racing skills on display and clocked his fastest lap at 135.787 mph.

Starting next to Briscoe is the Newman/Haas/Lanigan owned Dallara driven by Justin Wilson. The NHL team won the first road race of the year in St. Petersburg, and they look to have their gear in top form again at the Glenn. Wilson’s teammate, Graham Rahal, didn’t fare as well. The kid crashed again, and wasn’t able to make it into today’s final qualifications. He will start 18th.

Indy 500 champ, Scott Dixon is the King of the Glen, winning the last three races at the venue. He has a great show to make it four-in-a-row from his starting position on the outside of the second row.

Helio Castroneves had mechanical issues today, and wasn’t able to post a time. He will start at the back of the field, but it should be fun to watch him work his way to the front. The Penske cars are fast, and he should be able to move to the front.

Other drivers to watch:

  • Oriol Servia - Oriol starts fifth, and he has been consistent all year long. With the right strategy, KV Racing could get their first win.
  • Will Power - Power has shown that he can get a good start. He’s 12th on the grid to start, but a good start could put him in the top 8 or 10, into the fight.
  • Ryan Hunter-Reay -This guy is my new favorite driver. He’s got personality, talent, and he carries a car that is not as capable as the other teams on the grid. Ryan is my dark horse for a win.

The Camping World Grand Prix at the Glen airs Sunday on ABC at 3:30 PM ET.
