Cold Shower: George Dampens Speculation

Written by Allan Brewer · February 24, 2006

Tony George says he and Kevin Kalkhoven are not close to striking a deal to merge the two open-wheel series, as both sides have business commitments to honor.

After several days of hopeful anticipation, the supporters of American open-wheel racing’s reunification sobered to a familiar reality as Tony George clarified his stance on the matter.

“It was a one-day story,” the Indy Racing League’s founder said Thursday. “I don’t expect anything extraordinary to come of it.”

Asked if a deal with Champ Car was still possible for the 2007 season, George paused before answering.

“I have no idea where to go with that (answer) because we’re not really trying to make something happen.”

    The quote that I thought was interesting;

    “So I don’t know if it’s possible for 2007 or not.”

    Now I don’t think Tony is sophisticated enough to manipulate a quote, but it does leave a hope for beyond 2007, intentional or not, doesn’t it?

    The key here he’s downplaying the situation, which the both of them need to do because business and legal wise, they do indeed have contractual commitments (that conflict). I take the original story as closer to what’s happening (or not) when it’s mentioned they’re trying to get to know each other. Leave them be.

Got something to say?
