Dixon, Wheldon make up all-Target/Ganassi front row at Kansas

Written by Scott Keller · April 26, 2008

The Target Team has got the 1.5 mile ovals figured out, that is for sure. Their duo of drivers, Scott Dixon and Dan Wheldon, will start side-by-side on the front row after qualifying first and second in today’s 4-lap qualifying session. In surprising fashion, Thomas Scheckter pedaled his Dallara into fourth place, and will start on the outside of Danica Patrick. He’s running for the Luczo Dragon Tracing team that has only had their Dallara for two-weeks, and they are a thread to win this race. Maybe Roger Penske has given his kid some trick parts to his kid? I’m thinking so.

And then there is the story of Marty Roth who blew the socks off of everyone with his performance.

Roth, who barely could keep his car pointed in the right direction at St. Pete, qulified seventh! He will start ahead of the likes of Helio Castroneves, Ryan Briscoe, Tony Kanaan, and Marco Andretti. In fact, Roth is the meat in the sandwich between the two Penske cars behind, and the two Vision cars ahead. And speaking of Vision, the Tony George owned team has done their oval homework over the winter, and are looking pretty solid.

Tony Kanaan was not a happy camper, and he sounds pretty worked up about the performance of his team. I think he might be feeling like the forgotten senior-driver at AGR with all of the drooling over Danica’s win last week. It would be great to see Kanaan charge from mid-pack and fight for the front, but AGR has some work to do on his car.

The last ten qualifiers are the nine “transition teams” plus Milka Dunno. I feel bad for Bruno, because getting beat by Dunno means that his car is total junk. This guy can drive, and he can race ovals, and he needs to be with a better team.

On the other hand, good job by Jaime Camara. He jumped into the car and put up a respectable speed on such short notice.

Here’s the starting grid for tomorrow’s race, that will be shown live on ESPN2. Check our “Racing On TV” page for more information about television coverage in your part of the world.
