Andretti/Green Racing’s Dario Franchitti (214.138 mph) was fastest of the twenty cars and drivers taking laps at Texas Motor Speedway Thursday (June 7th) afternoon as IndyCar practice ahead of Saturday’s 550 kilometer (342 mile) race got underway.

The fastest eight cars carried the livery of three of the best teams in the Indy Racing League as AGR, Chip Ganassi Racing and Team Penske crowded the standings atop the timesheets for the first of two practice sessions.

Tony Kanaan (214.072 mph) led the way in the initial group of cars that began to circulate over the 1.5 mile oval at 4:30 PM Texas time.

The metal grandstands that ring the track were empty as the locals shunned the opportunity to see the men and women of the Indy Racing League warm up to the Lone Star surroundings.

It was hot, ninety-one degrees, with gusty winds to 25 mph as the League returned to the Fort Worth track a week later than its usual week-after-Indy date of the past.

Sam Hornish put in the most laps (34) of any driver in the session, achieving a best speed of 213.535 mph.
