IRL Drivers On Road Courses
Written by George Katinger · January 27, 2004
As to be expected, IRL drivers are expressing a keen interest to go road racing. With the pending resolution of the CART bankruptcy, its a good bet the IRL will be on the twisties no later than 2005. Is a good oval racer a good road racer? Not necessarily. Road racers can become exceptional oval stars as proven by the influx of international drivers to the IRL and CART. How many dedicated oval racers have made the change the other way around? Damn few I’d guess.

Well, off the top of my head: A. J. Foyt, Mario Andretti, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Kyle Petty, Bobby Allison, Davey Allison and more all are or were good road racers. Maybe not world class, but that seems more due to emphasis rather than innate ability. Of course, they didn’t make a career of road racing, except for Mario.
Challenge: name drag racers who’ve become good oval or road racers. (grin!)
Good racers are good racers.
AJ, Mario, Jeff Gordon, and Tony Stewart definitely. I will add Mark Martin and Dale Sr., but Kyle Petty!? C’mon, when was the last time he won ANYWHERE, let alone on a road course? Sure he is running the 24hrs of Daytona, but that doesn’t mean he’s good at it.
