Andretti Green’s Tony Kanaan went to a fight and a race broke out on the way to his 13th all-time IndyCar win at Richmond Raceway on Saturday. ”I’m going to enjoy my win for sure,” said Kanaan after holding off fellow Brazilian Helio Castroneves and Indy Racing League championship points leader Scott Dixon. “I knew that I had to keep fighting. There’s nothing else I can do. If you’re going to have the season you expect every year, then it’s going to be pretty boring I would say.”

“I knew it was going to turn around. I didn’t know when. I thought it was last weekend and I made a mistake. When those kinds of things happen, I have a tendency to actually have more strength to turn the situation around. I think I work better when I put a lot of pressure on myself, and I came in determined to win this race and it worked out.”

Dixon remains well in control of the IRL championship race with his result, and couldn’t help stirring the pot with comments regarding Danica Patrick’s racecraft. The New Zealander criticized the diminutive Patrick for blocking repeatedly, offering her up the nickname “the new Scott Sharp” after the recently retired Rahal Letterman driver whose fame at making a single-seater wide was legend.

The on-track action resumes this weekend with a big Fourth of July celebration at Watkins Glen International, where Dixon has reigned supreme in recent contests. Also on the bill is a Saturday same-day double-header Indy Lights set of races over the beautiful upstate New York venue.

Wow what a sloppy race at Richmond! Maybe that track is just too short for modern IndyCars. I watched it since I am a hardcore fan, but I can’t imagine a new fan would have held on through all those yellows and confusion. Did anyone else have the same thoughts?
