As we mentioned here recently, Patrick Carpentier was slated to join Eddie Cheever’s Red Bull Racing team and run in the IRL in 2005 and beyond. Official word of this move came yesterday.

It puzzles me that Patrick had no opportunities in Champ Car. He’s a veteran of the series and came in third in the points this season. My guess is that he’s asking more than any Champ Car team (other than Newman Haas) can afford to pay right now.

Patrick will have Toyota power in 2005 as Cheever abandons Chevy one year before they abandon the IRL altogether.

I am extremely glad to hear that Patrick will replace Ed Carpenter and not Alex Barron as originally thought. Alex deserves his position on the team far more than the young rookie Carpenter, in my opinion.
