Opening Weekend Practice Summary
Written by George Katinger · May 10, 2004
At last, we have some practice times at IMS leading up to the much anticipated Indy 500. The anticipation, on my part anyway, is to see what kind of speed the teams will extract from the new, smaller engine package.

Not a single car was able to develop any speed over 220 mph. I am sure that will change between now and qualifying. Where there are racers looking for wins and talented engineers and chasis tuners, there will always be more speed.
I hope and pray that the reverse of what the IRL intended by reducing engine size will not come to pass; a more dangerous car. If you are restricted on total horsepower, how do you gain more speed? By reducing downforce and working on reducing aero drag. That will make the cars inherently more unstable, but potentialy faster.
A slight bobble between closely running cars at “reduced” speeds still in excess of 200 mph may bring “the big one” NASCAR drivers talk about and dread. Only the IRL boys don’t have a tubular steel roll cage cocoon around and OVER them like NASCAR has. Lets all keep our fingers crossed and hope for a fast, clean, wreck free, month of May.
