Power, Servia show pure speed at Indy Car test debut
Written by Scott Keller · March 21, 2008
Going into the “mergificated” Indy Car season for 2008, the pundits aren’t giving the Champ Car guys a chance at winning a race, or even staying competitive. Many speculated that the new teams would have a terrible time getting a grip on their new Dallaras. Will Power and Oriol Servia sure showed just how good the top Champ Car guys really are by putting up impressive numbers in his first 48 hours in their new rides.
In short time, KV Racing’s drivers found speed in their freshly painted chassis, with both drivers posting times in the sub-53-second category. Servia was quickest with a 52.7, with will power only three-tenths off the pace at 52.4 seconds. The times would have been good enough for 3rd and 5th fastest on the time sheet for the Sebring test held by the “Indy Car regulars” earlier in the month.
Of course, conditions may have been a little better for the Champ Car guys this week because Sebring had a lot of rubber put down by the American Le Mans Series race last that took place the weekend before. But clearly, the KV guys have found speed without any of the trick wings and big-dollar development that the top Indy Car teams have to work with. It was an impressive display from a team that didn’t have much time to prepare.
The oval test slated for next week at Homestead-Miami speedway should give everyone a better idea of how competitive the Champ Car guys will be overall. With the bulk of the Indy Car season taking place on ovals, they can’t rely on their road course experience to compete with the best.
