INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Subway announced today that it will provide the primary sponsorship on the No. 20 machine of two-time Indianapolis 500 champion Al Unser Jr. for the 88th running of the acclaimed race on Sunday, May 30, 2004.
Subway has been an active supporter of motorsports for a number of years with a very successful program in NASCAR Nextel Cup which includes two race entitlements and major sponsorship on the No. 16 car of Greg Biffle.
Given the status of the Indianapolis 500 as the greatest spectacle in motorsports as well as the largest one day sporting event in the world, this was an ideal time for Subway to take its sponsorship efforts to the next level.
“With its worldwide audience, the Indy 500 is one of the premier sporting events in the world and the Indy Racing League has developed into a world-class racing series,” said Chris Carroll, Marketing Director, Subway Franchisee Advertising Fund Trust. “We saw this as the perfect opportunity to expand our program into another realm of the business, and align ourselves with proven winners in Al Jr. and Patrick Racing.”
Subway will join associate sponsor Stacker 2 on the Patrick Racing Chevrolet/Dallara/Firestone entry. “Its great to have Subway involved in the Indianapolis 500,” said two-time Indy winner Al Unser Jr. “We”ll do everything we can to give them a good run.”
Both Al Jr. and Patrick Racing have storied backgrounds at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This year Al Jr. is participating in his 17th Indianapolis 500. He will start from the middle of row 6 in the 17th position. In his 16 previous starts, he has posted 10 top-10 finishes, including seven top-fives and the two victories in 1992 and 1994.
2004 will mark Patrick Racing”s 24th appearance and 45th start at IMS. To date the team has claimed 20 top-10 finishes, with 14 top-fives, three second place showings, and three wins (Gordon Johncock - 1973 and 1982; Emerson Fittipaldi - 1989).
