Yellow gets Green Light from IRL

Yellow Ribbon Racing

aims to link members of the Armed Forces to patriotic citizens through a not-for-profit IRL racing team. Imagine you’re a Marine in Basra….

You write a short story about your service and a race fan stateside sees it, is moved by it, and elects to sponsor you and your troop on the side of an IRL racecar by a donation to Yellow Ribbon Racing.

That’s the novel concept behind this recently announced team. According to Tony George, President and CEO of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, “This team will (make) a significant statement to race fans throughout the world (acknowledging) support for our Armed Forces and the significant role they have played in the history as well as the future of our sport”.

No drivers were announced for the two-car team, nor is it clear what relationship the current Vision IRL team may have with Yellow Ribbon. In a brief statement George continues, “The IRL is assisting Yellow Ribbon Racing with the essentials of developing a team by providing them with the guidance and support necessary to be prepared for the 2006 season.”

Jan Lammers “Racing for Holland” had a similar concept for his Le Mans effort. Small Dutch sponsors could buy a “sticker” & place it on the car.

How it will work out for Yellow Ribbon Racing is anybody’s guess, I’m sure it will have its detractors & supporters.

I am always suspicious of people who try to hitch their business to patriotism. It’s that old phrase “The flag is the last refuge of the scoundrel.”

I would love to know if their are any charitable contributions to veterans groups associated with the sponsorship. THAT would make a lot of sense. Especially when private groups are trying to raise 10 million bucks for a veterans physical rehab facility in Texas.

Got something to say?
