The Bump Heard ’round the Nation

In the few hours that have elapsed since the “incident” of the closing laps of the “Guy Whose Name I Don’t Remember Anymore” 500 at Richmond, I have surmised quite a few things. I don’t even need to explain what “the incident” is. Everyone knows. It is really, really not wise to attempt to defend Kyle Busch. No one will remember that Denny Hamlin had the rest of the field crushed under his heel for ¾ of the race. People will only remember that he brought out “that” caution. Winning this race will sort of be like winning at Homestead when you are not about to become the Sprint Cup Champion. No one will remember who went to Victory Lane. Clint who??? All that being said, this was by far the most entertaining race of the season. We had poor decision-making, high drama, hurt feelings, outstanding plot twists, and most of all, crushed dreams. Did you see Dale Jr.’s interview with FOX after the race? I really thought he was going to fall weeping into Krista Voda’s arms....

Double Clutchin’-When’s The Last Time NASCAR Had A Great Moment?

Let me explain. I just finished reading Joe Garner’s, book-Speed, Guts, and Glory: 100 Unforgettable Moments In NASCAR History, and while I found it an excellent read, it also turned my thoughts in another direction, and prompted me to ask the following question: When is the last time that NASCAR had a truly great moment? And by great, I mean a moment so big that it transcends the sport and becomes the talk of the entire sports community. Something so big that ESPN actually spends time talking...

Richard Childress Racing -Riding Under the Radar and Loving It

As race fans continue to marvel at Kyle Busch’s fast train to superstardom and agonize over when Dale Jr. will win a race, there is one team evading all the hype and keeping its eyes on the big prize.  Sure, Joe Gibbs has all three of his teams in the top ten in the Sprint Cup point standings, but in case you hadn’t noticed, so does Richard Childress.    RCR is without a doubt the most overlooked team of the 2008 season, and I’m not just talking about the media’s total disregard of Clint...

Double Clutchin’-The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly At Darlington

Tonight’s race at Darlington was a great way to get to know Kyle Busch . If someone who had only a cursory knowledge of NASCAR and it’s drivers, tuned in to the race Saturday night, they would have had the privilege of seeing every facet of Kyle Busch’s racing persona. The Good: Busch flat-out owned the redecorated Darlington track, coming back from a pit row penalty that put him a lap down, to dominate the race, beating Carl Edwards by over three seconds, for his third Sprint...

Too Tough To Tame!!!

Is the old lady still “Too tough to tame?” Darlington has been repaved, so it shouldn’t tear up tires like it used to, but will the increased speeds be reflected in more damaging “Darlington Stripes?” With the safer barriers in placeand the seemingly sturdier COT platforms there might be less damage from the ol’ Darlington stripe. It’s really tough to predict. But hopefully some teams won’t over-tweak their camber settings, and cars won’t be torn up because of tire problems. Give...
