Allmendinger Loses Seat: Open Wheel to Nascar Not So Nice

Written by Douglas Brown · March 5, 2008

In light of my earlier post about Open Wheel drivers moving to Nascar, I’ve actually been paying more attention to the races – well, the box scores. Good move on someone’s part to attract this fan. That said, I cannot stand the overhyped TV coverage, but I have been paying attention.

Despite Sam’s 15th place finish at Daytona, he’s since gone 43rd and 41st; Carpentier has one start and one DNF; Villeneuve has yet to even qualify; and in three attempts, Dario’s average finish is 32.

News this week is that A.J. Allmendinger lost his seat to veteran and current truck series driver Mike Skinner. The team release says “temporarily” but looking at his performance over the past two seasons, it’s not looking good for A.J.

Eh….I think they will keep AJ around…but they do need to get things sorted at least to the point where they can get the car in a race and get AJ some wheel time. Red Bull has put a TON of money into the AJ train for years now, I’m pretty sure that’s why he’s not completely fired…..yet.

Just another case of a bright star being pushed too fast. If Jerques Villanova had stay with Williams, or any other top line team for a few more seasons he would have had a much brighter career in F1. Instead his ego inflated after his early sucess and his sponsor went goo goo thinking he was the best thing since sliced bread. We all know there is nothing better than sliced bread and Jerques has proven that.

AJ should have spend more time honing his impressive road racing skills instead of chasing the money. I truely hopes he goes without a ride and his road racing skills rust to the point he will never get a chance at open wheel again. Kinda like what’s happened to Jerques.

and we care why? Dont get me wrong I love racing and all types but… When will you people get the message that just because a driver who is a champion of one type of car is going to just be able to sit in another and win races immediatly. The nature of any athlete at the top of his profession is to strive to be the best. They obsess over the details. The details of an open wheel car are vastly different from a NASCAR stock car. To expect a driver to only take a year or two to get to the top is simply unobtainable. That doesnt mean a driver wont have some success one only has to look to montoya for that. However to expect every driver to get in turn the key and win isnt going to happen. We have seen drivers go the other way from nascar to open wheel and they have done little. Apples and Oranges are both fruit and grow on trees but when you peel the skin you got a different kind of juice…… Lets just let the drivers drive give them some time and if they can make the transistion great if not they wont last in the seats long. Stop getting excited when they jump from one to the other and lets get to racing.

What I don’t like is giving them points from another driver, if they can’t qualify and get in on their own then they don’t race. Like last year when the big merger between DEI and Ginn came about the15 got points and all of a sudden Menard didn,t need to worry about making a race, that is wrong but I guess that is the way the tire rolls.

Got something to say?
