And the points debate begins…

Written by George Katinger · November 17, 2003

…in earnest. Can we at least let Jack, Mat and Mark enjoy the awards banquet and savor their victory for a few days before we start sniping at the system they won by?

Well, I think that two out of three should silence any carping. Anyone who thinks the point system doesn’t work has blinkers on and doesn’t follow anything but Winston Cup racing.

The originator of the point system admitted it wasn’t perfect, but when the Trucks and Busch go down to the last race of the season with several drivers capable of winning, there’s nothing basically wrong with the way points are awarded.

Sure, Kenseth only had one victory all season, but his team had the most consistent runs all year. Ryan Newman had a string of DNFs and poor finishes that killed his chances. He and Matt Borland have admitted as much.

Would I have liked to see Newman win? Sure. I like him personally more than I do Kenseth. Do I think Kenseth doesn’t deserve the trophy and all the goodies that go with it? Not at all. They had the same chances for bad luck everyone else did. Just like Benny Parsons in ‘73; just like Alan Kulwicki, they played the cards dealt them within the rules of the game and won with them.

No, the point system doesn’t need fixing, “fans” simply need to understand that sometimes this sort of thing happens. I could draw baseball analogies, football analogies, golf analogies, basketball analogies. In all those sports, similar things can happen to determine the outcome of games or seasons.

I haven’t heard Yankees fans yelling that the MLB system needs fixing, have you?

Got something to say?
