At least they’re making it interesting!

With Carl Edwards qualifying fourth and Jimmie Johnson starting 30th, there is a chance Jimmie could finish below 38th overall, with Edwards leading the most laps and winning the event to claim his first Sprint Cup National Title. But I really don’t see that happening. Johnsom isn’t going to be content running near the rear. He should be in the top ten well before the field reaches the halfway mark. The only thing that could derail Johnson at this point would be for him to have similar engine problems to Jeff Gordon last week. You can beat Johnson’s crew has gone through his race motor with a fine tooth comb.

At the end of Ford 400 expect to the blue #48 Chevrolet celebrating for all he’s worth, as a three time Sprint Cup Champion. But it will be his final consecutive Championship. I predict next year there will be a different make up of the final 12. And I don’t think there will be as much domination by one or two drivers during the course of the regular season.

You notice that Red Bull swapped their drivers this week. Brian Vickers qualified the #84 car twentieth overall. If he can deliver a good run from that car he will hopefully finish in the top 35 in points, thereby relieving the Red Bull team from having to qualify either of their team cars during the first five races of 2009.

Did you also notice that Scott Speed qualified the #83 Red Bull Toyota on the front row? I think, if the Red Bull Team can bring up the performance of the #84 car to that of the #83 they will have an easy Rookie of the Year victor in Scott Speed. In fact I predict that Speed will win at least one Sprint Cup race in 2009.

I also predict that Mark Martin will be a solid Chase contender in 2009, along with his two new teammates, Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earhardt Jr. I think it might be a struggle for Jeff Gordon to make next year’s Chase. At least four Roush drivers will probably make the Chase in 2009. Add Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch and Denny Hamlin and the top 12 slots quickly fill up. Bu that’s all going to happen next year.

This year Jimmie Johnson will claim a spot in history with a well deserved third consecutive Sprint Cup National Championship.
