For the second time in a row, Joe Nemechek will start a NASCAR NEXTEL Cup race from pole position. This week, “Front Row Joe” nabbed the fastest qualifying position from rookie Kasey Kahne by .151 sec. Nemechek was the only qualifier to post a lap under 30 seconds and over 180 mph, joining Ricky Rudd who set similar times in practice Friday morning. Nemechek’s time of 29.974 sec/180.156 mph was a scant .010 second/.160 mph quicker than Rudd’s practice lap.
Jeremy Mayfield put his No. 19 Dodge in third, followed by Jimmie Johnson and Bobby Labonte to fill out the top five qualifiers.
Failing to qualify were Mike Garvey, Mike Wallace, Carl Long and Morgan Shepherd. Provisional starters will be led by Kyle Petty with Larry Gunselman, Hermie Sadler, Kirk Shelmerdine and Stanton Barrett filling out the 43 starters.
