Gordon Going For The May Deuce
Written by George Katinger · March 9, 2004
That would be Robby Gordon, and the deuce is the elusive same day tandem of the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Has anyone been able to pull off this little gem of racing? Not to my knowledge. I don’t think anyone has ever won either of the same day races, have they? It makes for an interesting read and catchy headlines. The bottom line, I’d be more impressed if he focused on one race and made a serious effort to win, as opposed to spreading himself over half the country. Get real Robby, stick with NASCAR and give an open wheel veteran like Al Unser Jr. the Indy ride.

No one has won either race when attempting this trick. Robbie would do well to TRY to win in NASCAR, if that were possible. His little two a day day stunt is nothing more than for the Pub it gains for his sponsors.
Couldn’t agree more. Winning on an oval in NASCAR should be Robby’s primary concern. However, the idea that it is even possible to win both in a day is cool. Just wish someone capable of pulling it off (Tony Stewart) was doing it. But Even TS has come to his senses and given up on that until his NASCAR days are done.
This may be good for Robby, he has a much better chance a winning the Indy then he does on a Nascar oval. If we all keep our fingers crossed, a IRL team owner may fall in love with his driving and scoop him away from Nascar. Just imagine, Nascar with no Spencer or Robby Gordon. That is two less cautions and one less fight a race!
That goal is more elusive then any other feat in all of sport. If you were going to race a 250 or 300 mile mid or short track event after the Indy 500, you may stand a chance. 600 miles at Lowes AFTER 500 at Indy? No way. Unless you hired Ivan the “Iron Man” Stewart to drive.
I’d like to think that Tony “Tuff Nuts” Stewart could pull it off if anyone could.
Tony has the talent to do it but as George said earlier, it is too much of a strain on the body. A couple of years ago, I saw Tony have a top ten in each race and they carried him off on a stretcher!
Yeah…but whatever doesn’t kill him will make him stronger.
Not untill he loses that Pillsbury Dough Boy Physique and gets in shape. As Dave said, 1100 miles in a day almost killed Tony once, which is why he won’t try it again. RG, on the other hand has ego deficit disorder and needs the attention. After all, he can’t win races, so he resorts to the cheap publicity stunt.
