Hamlin on Pocono Pole (Again)

Rookie Denny Hamlin won his second Pocono fast qualifier trophy and third career Busch pole, beating out Ryan Newman’s time by 0.128 sec. Hamlin won pole for the June 9 Pocono 500 with a lap of 53.054 sec/169.638 mph, then came back in July and bettered that lap with a clocking of 52.995 sec/169.827 mph.


Fellow rookie Steven Leicht, with only twelve laps at Pocono’s tricky three-turn layout, clocked a lap fast enough to put him in the field in the No. 90 Ford out of Robert Yates Racing’s stable of cars. Yates this week announced that Elliott Sadler will be released from his contract at the end of the season with Sadler going on to look at other opportunities for the 2007 season.

Matt Kenseth wheeled the fastest-qualifying Ford to eleventh on the grid, nearly a half second slower than Hamlin’s Chevy. Kurt Busch broke his string of second-place qualifying results by falling back to seventh, to be flanked on the fourth row of the grid by his younger brother Kyle.
