Jeff Gordon Tops in First Practice

Jeff Gordon was the head of the class in practice at Bristol prior to Friday afternoon’s qualifying session. Gordon’s No. 24 Chevrolet was credited with a best lap of 14.939 seconds, 128.442 mph. Gordon was the only driver to dip into the 14-second lap range and into the 128 mph range.
Second to Gordon was last year’s dominant winner, Ryan Newman, in the No. 12 Dodge. Newman’s best time was 15.043 seconds for a lap speed of 127.554 mph, just .002 second quicker than Robby Gordon’s Chevy at 15.045 sec, 127.537 mph. Elliott Sadler clicked the watches only another .004 second back, with Jeff Burton making his second run in the RCR Chevrolet at 15.071 seconds, 127.317 mph to close out the top five in practice.
46 of the drivers entered were within less than a second of Jeff Gordon’s best lap time with only Kirk Shelmerdine and Ryan McGlynn falling short of the one-second margin. Last week’s winner at Michigan, Greg Biffle, clocked the 25th-best time, followed by Jimmie Johnson.
